Frequently
Asked
Questions

about CAPS for Czech CASPs authorised by the ČNB

Where does CAPS fit for AML staff at a CASP authorised by the Czech National Bank?

The ČNB became the competent authority under MiCA with effect from 15 February 2025, on the basis of Act No. 31/2025 Coll., the Financial Market Digitalisation Act. CAPS is the third and highest level of our pathway, after AML Foundations and CASS, and it is aimed at the person running the AML function inside a provider that has to satisfy that supervisor.

Why does this matter when the ČNB received 248 applications and issued only six authorisations by February 2026?

Those are the Bank’s own figures: 248 applications, the vast majority arriving at the end of July 2025, with the first six authorisations issued on 11 February 2026. That ratio is the argument — a Czech application isn’t a formality, and files that go back and forth cost months. The AML section of the dossier is one of the places where quality shows immediately.

Is CAPS accredited, and does the ČNB endorse it?

CAPS is CPD accredited and was built with practising AML specialists. The ČNB does not endorse, approve or recognise it, and neither does any other EU supervisor recognise named private certifications. The Bank has said what it assesses: the provider itself, and in particular its risk management, internal control mechanisms, organisational arrangements and capital provision. CAPS addresses the competence behind the first two.

What are the eligibility rules for Czech candidates?

Two conditions, both required. • At least four years of professional experience in AML compliance or a related field. • A recognised AML certification such as CASS or an equivalent qualification, or other professional recognition. Click on the “Check eligibility” button to contact us. Experience at a Czech obliged entity under Act No. 253/2008 Coll. counts, whether or not it was in the crypto sector.

What does CAPS give a Czech provider under Act No. 253/2008 Coll.?

A CPD-accredited Certified Anti-Money Laundering Principal Specialist certificate and one year of CPD institute membership. Czech AML obligations sit under Act No. 253/2008 Coll. and are supervised alongside MiCA authorisation by the ČNB, with the Finanční analytický úřad acting as the financial intelligence unit.

Can I enrol if I do not meet the entry criteria?

No. CAPS is an advanced programme with strict entry requirements and we hold to them, because the material moves fast and assumes prior responsibility. CASS at €959 is the level below and is the normal route in. Given how quickly many Czech firms staffed up during the 2025 application wave, it is worth checking honestly which level fits before booking.

How long does CAPS take, and can I fit it around a live ČNB proceeding?

Five to six weeks, online and self-paced. That format exists because authorisation proceedings do not run to a predictable rhythm. A ČNB proceeding can be suspended and then recommence, for example when an applicant submits additional information — so the weeks you thought were free frequently aren’t. Nothing in the course requires you to be available on a set date.

Is CAPS taught in Czech?

No, the programme is taught in English, with the Czech framework built into the material: the ČNB as MiCA competent authority, Act No. 31/2025 Coll. and Act No. 253/2008 Coll. Czech statutory references are given in their proper form, since a translated paraphrase of an act number isn’t something you can put in front of a supervisor.

How does the CAPS exam work for candidates in Czechia?

Sixty questions sat online within ninety minutes, mixing multiple choice, case-based scenarios and true/false items. No attendance in Prague or anywhere else is required. The scenario questions carry most of the difficulty and are built around incomplete information and competing obligations, which is a fair reflection of what the role involves once a firm is actually authorised.

What is the CAPS pass mark?

80% across sixty questions. Neither Act No. 253/2008 Coll. nor the ČNB sets an examination threshold for AML staff, so this is the programme’s own standard rather than a regulatory one. It is set high on purpose: in a market where the ČNB had granted six authorisations out of 248 applications by February 2026, a qualification that is easy to obtain proves nothing.

What happens if I do not pass the CAPS exam first time?

Two further attempts are available, each opening fifteen days after the previous sitting, at €75 per retake. Written feedback shows where the marks went. Build the intervals into your planning if the certificate is meant to be in place before a submission date, because two retakes plus their waiting periods take the process past the one-month mark.

Does the CAPS certificate hold outside Czechia?

Yes. You receive the Certified Anti-Money Laundering Principal Specialist certificate, which is recognised in the Czech Republic and abroad. The Czech crypto sector is closely tied to neighbouring markets, and because MiCA applies as a regulation rather than through national transposition, the substance of what you learn holds whether the employer is authorised in Prague, Bratislava or Vienna.

When do I receive the certificate after passing?

Immediately and in digital form, together with the official CAPS designation. There’s no printing or postal step. If the qualification is intended to support the staffing section of an authorisation file, that matters, because supplementary information submitted mid-proceeding restarts clocks and a certificate that arrives two weeks late can hold up a whole response.

What does CAPS cost for a Czech CASP?

The CAPS programme for Czech CASPs costs €1695 including VAT, and that includes all course materials, the exam fee and certificate issuance. The fee is denominated in euro rather than koruna, so if your firm accounts in CZK, budget against the rate on the payment date. Compare it against what a delayed authorisation costs in a queue of 248 applications.

Are discounts available to Czech public-sector staff?

Yes. Public sector employees receive a 20% discount on the programme fee, and other promotions run at intervals, so ask what is current before booking. Anyone employed at the ČNB or at the Finanční analytický úřad should mention it at the enquiry stage, since the price quoted publicly is not the price that applies in that case.

Can my Czech employer sponsor my place?

Yes, we accept organisational sponsorships, and [email protected] deals with bulk enrolments and business invoicing. If you are preparing or defending an authorisation, more than one place is worth considering, because of what the ČNB has said it looks for — an AML framework that actually operates, rather than a set of policies with one qualified name attached to them.
